The benefits of hot baths for the body and mind in winter

Gudrun Howell · January 17, 2026 ·

When the temperatures drop, nothing is more comforting than a warm bath. Beyond the pleasure it provides, the hot bath is a real therapy for the body and mind. In winter, it becomes a perfect solution to warm up while enjoying a moment of relaxation. Learn about the many benefits it offers and how to get the most out of it.

Relax muscles and relieve tension

A warm bath is a valuable ally to relax your tired muscles. The heat of the water stimulates blood circulation, which helps to release the tension accumulated in the body. After a stressful day or physical activity, soaking in warm water helps soothe muscle and joint pain.

The relaxing effect is even more pronounced if you add Epsom salts to your bath. These salts, rich in magnesium, promote muscle relaxation and reduce inflammation. You can also use essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus, which intensify the feeling of well-being while helping to calm the mind.

To maximize the benefits on your body, take a warm bath for 15 to 20 minutes. Make sure the water temperature is comfortable, around 37-39°C, to avoid any discomfort or feeling excessively tired.

Promote mental relaxation and reduce stress

Winter, with its short and often dark days, can affect your mood. A warm bath is a great way to get rid of stress and regain a peaceful state of mind. The heat of the water triggers the release of endorphins, the happiness hormones, which help calm the mind and improve your mood.

By creating a relaxing atmosphere, you amplify this beneficial effect. Turn off the main lights and light a few candles for a subdued atmosphere. Add essential oils like ylang-ylang or chamomile, known for their soothing properties, to your bath or a nearby diffuser.

Take this moment to completely disconnect. Leave your phone aside and focus on your breathing. You can even listen to a relaxing playlist or practice a few minutes of meditation while bathing. This wellness break is ideal for recharging your batteries and better facing the winter days.

Moisturize and revitalize your skin

In winter, your skin is often put to the test. Cold, wind and indoor heating can dry it out and make it dull. The hot bath can be an opportunity to pamper it and restore its shine.

Add moisturizing ingredients to your bath to deeply nourish your skin. For example, pour a few drops of sweet almond, coconut or argan oil directly into the water. These natural oils create a protective barrier that locks in moisture.

Milk or oatmeal baths are also great for softening and soothing irritated skin. The milk contains lactic acid, which gently exfoliates, while the oats help calm redness and itching.

After your bath, pat dry gently with a towel and apply a cream or body oil to prolong the moisturizing benefits. Your skin will be soft, luminous and ready to face the rigors of winter.

In short, taking a warm bath in winter is much more than just a moment of relaxation: it is a real therapy for body and mind. By promoting muscle relaxation, reducing stress and moisturizing your skin, it becomes an essential ritual to face the colder months. Take advantage of these moments to reconnect with yourself and transform your bathroom into a true sanctuary of well-being. Indulge in this simple luxury and let the warmth of the bath soothe your winter days.
