Fans of diets around the world have a new favorite – instead Paleo, Mediterranean diet and the UN, now it is ever more popular the so-called Victorian diet.
Experts that advise this kind of diet say that you need to eat like the people in the 19th century, and that will not only melt the pounds, but will make us very healthy. And do you know what is best of all? People then ate up to 5,000 calories per day –which means no starvation!
The period between 1850 and 1872 was the golden age of nutrition, says Dr. Judith Roubotam, a scientist from the University “Plymouth”, and co-author of a study that dealt precisely with this diet. The people who lived then were much healthier and more vital than us, even though they ate up to 5,000 calories per day. It clearly shows that the recipe for a healthy diet does not lie in the quantity – but the quality of what we eat.
– A diet of that time was based on garlic, watercress, cabbage, beets, and apples. They ate the leftover meat from the bones, and from the cooking of the bones they get a big source of nutrients. They ate a lot of cherries, which at that time were extremely cheap and valid for ‘poor fruit.’ Dr. Roubotam explains that fish was extremely dominant in the diet, especially herring and mackerel.
One more important item during that time was bread. People in the 19th century ate a lot of bread with yeast, which positively affects the immune system, so it should not surprise us that they were very healthier then us. The vegetables were more common, so in the Victorian era people ate up to ten servings of fresh vegetables throughout the day!
Investigation of this doctor shows that people in that era worked until the seventies without any problem – and she is wondering how many 70-year-olds today can deal with the physical work? Some data show that people today spend seven to ten years of healing before death, which then definitely was not the case.
Because of this, the doctor recommends to forget all modern diets and turn to diet from two centuries ago.
– Return of the diet in the 19th century meant a lot of food prepared at home and avoiding processed, bottled foods, and an emphasis on fruits and vegetables. Such a diet would even be of great benefit, said Dr. Roubotam.
The important difference is that the working class at that time was bringing in more calories daily but practiced hard physical work that they used to spend all those calories. Today most of our time we spend in a seated position, the computer, and physical activity is necessary. On the other hand, sugar was a luxury then, was used only as a spice, not as a preservative.
This type of diet is the right choice for people today because it requires a lot of disclaimers, no starvation, and include all healthy foods.
– Many fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fish and good carbohydrates are a great recipe for a diet. Of course, avoiding sugar and alcohol is the major item and can only bring benefits. The meat should be eaten daily, and physical activity is necessary, nutritionists recommend.
