What causes fatty liver and which are the symptoms and how to treat?
Curcumin is one of the healthiest spices in the world. Contains many active compounds, curcumin, which has very strong anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, antifungal, antibacterial and anticancer properties.
Fatty liver is diagnosed bot only at people who drink excessive amounts of alcohol. What is a non-alcoholic liver disease?
There are two types of fatty liver disease, alcoholic fatty liver and nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD).
The first is caused by excessive consumption of alcohol, while the other is probably caused by the consumption of too many refined carbohydrates. NAFLD is associated with the metabolic syndrome and can be changed by applying a diet which includes reducing sugars and refined simple carbohydrates.
According to Mayo Clinic, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease occurs when your liver has a problem with fat digestion, therefore, fat is deposited.
People who are overweight or have diabetes, high cholesterol or high triglycerides are at greater risk of developing the disease. Rapid weight loss and poor eating habits can also lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Fat deposition in the liver can lead to cirrhosis, and eventually may lead to liver damage.
How can curcumin help the liver?
According to a study Archives of Animal Nutrition, curcumin helped in the treatment of liver disease in cows.
Dairy cows live under great stress and this is probably the reason for fatty liver.
The researchers found that the stress hormone in the liver was significantly reduced in the group of cows fed with the polyphenol mixture consisting of green tea (95%) and extract of turmeric (5%). This indicates that this mix can prevent the syndrome of fatty liver.
Considering that the induction of fatty liver function in the same way, turmeric could be used in the fight against fatty liver in humans, too. This is not certainly confirmed, but this is not the first instance where curcumin helped in these and similar situations.
Another study, published in the Journal of Food Science found that curcumin may also reduce cholesterol and fat levels in the blood:
“Extract of Curcuma longa, better known as turmeric, was orally administered to mice that were fed a diet containing high cholesterol, to examine whether we could regulate plasma lipid (blood fats) and cholesterol and possibly improve the condition of the liver. With the addition of turmeric in rats, the study has shown a significant reduction in total plasma cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and increase of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (good cholesterol), compared with rats fed with previously predicted foods with cholesterol.”
The researchers suggest that turmeric prevents high blood cholesterol and the formation of fatty liver by modulating enzymes that are important for the metabolism of cholesterol.
Finally, turmeric can reduce inflammation of the liver by preventing the proinflammatory and profibrotic cytokines. It can also protect the liver from free radicals, such as damage caused by alcohol. This spice is so powerful, it even shows a capacity to treat scarring of the liver.
There are many ways in which you can enjoy in turmeric, one of the most delicious is definitely golden milk (recipe) and golden honey (recipe).
